What the numbers on the bottle actually mean
Both oils are multi-grade, and the label tells you everything if you know how to read it. The "5W" is the cold rating — the W stands for winter — and it describes how easily the oil flows when the engine is cold. Here is the part most arguments miss: 5W-30 and 5W-20 share the exact same "5W". At start-up, on a freezing morning, the two oils flow essentially identically. Anyone who tells you 5W-20 "protects better on cold starts" is misreading the spec — the cold-flow number is the same on both jugs.
The second number — 30 versus 20 — is the oil's viscosity once it reaches full operating temperature, around 100°C (212°F). A grade 30 oil is thicker at that temperature than a grade 20 oil. That single difference, hot viscosity, is the only meaningful thing that separates these two products. Everything else on this page flows from it.
