Gasoline: Cleaning Deposits You Cannot See

Deposits build in three places on a gasoline engine: the injector tips, the intake valves, and the combustion chamber. Here is the straight answer: a converter cleaner is a fuel-side and light-contamination product. It cannot rebuild a failed substrate, it cannot undo damage from an engine burning oil or coolant, and it will not reliably clear a P0420 that has a genuine mechanical cause. Do fuel additives actually work, or are they snake oil?

Both, depending on the bottle. Can a catalytic converter cleaner really fix a bad converter?

No — and any product page that implies otherwise is not being straight with you. A converter that is physically melted, cracked, plugged with debris or contaminated by burned coolant or oil is scrap metal, and no liquid poured into your gas tank restores the substrate. What these cleaners can do is burn off light carbon and sulfur contamination and clean up the fuel side of the equation, which owners do report helping with a marginal reading or a mild efficiency code. How often should I run a fuel system cleaner?

If your car is happy on 87 and never hears a knock sensor event, adding a bottle of booster changes nothing you can feel.
