Why Direct-Injection Engines Coke Up
Port injection had an accidental benefit nobody appreciated until it went away. The injector sprayed fuel into the intake runner just upstream of the valve, so every intake stroke washed atomized gasoline — and whatever detergent was in it — directly over the back of the valve. The valve got a free, continuous cleaning thousands of times a minute. Direct injection moved the injector into the cylinder head for efficiency, charge cooling and precise fuel control. Real engineering wins, but the valve lost its bath.
Now the only thing crossing the back of that valve is air, and what rides in that air is the problem. The positive crankcase ventilation system pulls oil-laden blow-by out of the crankcase and routes it back into the intake to be burned rather than vented; on many engines exhaust gas recirculation adds soot to the same stream. That oily mist lands on a valve running at several hundred degrees and bakes on, layer over layer, hardening into something closer to coke than soot.
