The Risk, Stated Plainly
A five-minute flush works by dissolving deposits fast. That is genuinely useful on an engine with mild varnish. It is dangerous on an engine with heavy sludge, and the failure mode is specific and worth understanding.
The oil pickup tube at the bottom of the sump has a mesh screen over it to stop debris reaching the pump. On a neglected engine, that screen is often already partly covered in sludge that built up slowly. Dislodge a sheet of tar from the sump wall or the windage tray and it can settle straight onto that screen. The engine now has restricted oil flow, and the first symptom is low oil pressure — a warning light, a gauge dropping, or a rattle on startup as the top end waits for oil that is arriving too slowly. Preventing It From Coming Back
Sludge is almost always a maintenance history rather than a bad engine. Four things prevent it.
Change the oil on time, with the right grade. Manufacturer intervals assume the specified oil and reasonable driving. If yours is mostly short cold trips, treat the severe-service interval as your normal one.
Let the engine reach operating temperature regularly. A car that only ever does five-minute trips never boils off the moisture and fuel that end up in the oil. One good highway run a week does more for sludge prevention than any bottle.
