Read this before you buy anything. If you drive a modern engine, change the oil on schedule, and use the grade in the owner’s manual, you almost certainly do not need an oil additive. Motor oil is not a plain lubricant waiting to be improved — a finished API-rated oil is typically 15 to 25 percent additive package already, with detergents, dispersants, anti-wear chemistry, viscosity modifiers and friction modifiers balanced against one another and validated to a specification. What Is Already in Your Oil
The reason most oil additives are unnecessary is that their functions are already present in the bottle you just poured in. A finished motor oil contains, at minimum: detergents to neutralize acids and keep hot surfaces clean; dispersants to hold soot and contaminants in suspension so the filter can catch them; anti-wear additives such as ZDDP that form a sacrificial film on cam lobes and lifters; viscosity index improvers that keep the oil flowing at cold start and thick enough when hot; antioxidants that slow thermal breakdown; friction modifiers that improve fuel economy; and anti-foam and pour-point agents.
That package is not thrown together — it is formulated as a system, tested to API and OEM specifications, and balanced so that adding more of one thing does not undermine another. More detergent than the dispersants can handle, for example, does not make an engine cleaner. Who Genuinely Benefits
High-mileage engines with real wear. Past roughly 150,000 miles, with measurable oil consumption or top-end noise, clearances have opened up and a thicker or friction-modifying product can meaningfully reduce consumption and quiet things down. This is the largest legitimate group.
Diesel injector stiction. The 6.0L and 7.3L Power Stroke use hydraulically actuated injectors that suffer from stiction as oil degrades, producing rough cold starts and misfires. Viscosity is not a free parameter. Adding a heavy stabilizer to a 0W-20 sump can slow oil delivery at cold start, which is exactly when most engine wear happens.
Warranty claims. An additive cannot void your whole warranty by itself, but it gives a manufacturer a very convenient argument if something fails. On a car under warranty, use what the manual says.
