What actually separates compound from polish
This is one of the most misunderstood pairings in car care, because the bottles look almost identical, they're applied the same way, and both promise "restored" paint. But they do fundamentally different work, and using the wrong one — or skipping one entirely — is why so many DIY correction jobs end up either hazy or underwhelming.
Both products are abrasives. That's the key thing to understand: neither one fills or hides anything, they physically cut the surface. The difference is grit. A compound uses coarser, more aggressive abrasives designed to shear away a measurable layer of clear coat, taking the defects — swirls, oxidation, water-etching, light scratches — down with it. Think of it as the coarse sandpaper of the liquid world. It has real cutting power, and that power is exactly what removes damage a wax could never touch.
A polish uses much finer abrasives. It removes far less material and is designed to refine the surface rather than reshape it — lifting fine haze, erasing light swirl marks, and bringing back the deep, wet-looking gloss and clarity that reflect light cleanly.
