What actually separates the two oils
Every motor oil is a base stock plus an additive package. The base stock is the bulk of the bottle — the actual lubricating fluid — and that is where full synthetic and synthetic blend part ways. The additive packages (detergents, anti-wear ZDDP, friction modifiers, viscosity improvers) can be similar between them; the difference is in the oil itself.
Full synthetic is built from chemically engineered base stocks — typically highly refined Group III, or true synthetics in Group IV (PAO) and Group V (esters). The molecules are uniform in size and shape. That uniformity is the whole point: consistent molecules do not have a scatter of weak, short-chain components that boil off, shear apart or oxidize early. The result is an oil that behaves predictably from a subzero cold start to a turbo heat-soak.
Synthetic blend is exactly what the name says — conventional mineral base stock (refined from crude) cut with a share of synthetic. Crucially, that share is not regulated.
