How we rank & full disclosure.
The short version: the Ram 1500 is the most fitment-complicated truck in this category, and it is not close. Three separate variables decide your part number — which body you have (the 2019+ DT redesign or the older DS, still sold as the "Ram 1500 Classic" through 2024), whether you have RamBox side storage, and whether you have the multifunction split tailgate. Get those three right and the rest is easy. Ranked across aggregated owner ratings and review volume, our #1 pick is the BAK BAKFlip MX4 (448223), one of the few premium covers that works with the split tailgate.
Top Picks at a Glance

Our #1 Pick: BAK BAKFlip MX4 (448223)
The MX4 is the strongest all-round hard cover on the market, and on the Ram it gains an extra advantage: this fitment is built to work alongside the multifunction split tailgate, which several premium competitors simply exclude. If you optioned the split tailgate — and a lot of 2019+ Rams did — that fact alone narrows the shortlist dramatically.
Mechanically it is three matte-finish aluminum panels on hinges, folding forward to the bulkhead and locking flat when the tailgate is closed, rated for roughly 400 pounds of evenly distributed load. It clamps to the bed rails with no drilling and owners routinely report a thirty to forty-five minute install with hand tools. The consistent praise across Ram reviews mirrors what owners say on every platform: it does not drum or flap at highway speed, and it keeps the bed genuinely dry in ordinary rain, draining through the rails rather than weeping at the corners.
The trade-offs are the usual hard-folding ones. Folded forward you get roughly two-thirds of the bed, not all of it — if you regularly stand something tall in there, look at the TruXedo Lo Pro roll-up or a hard rolling cover instead. It is heavy enough that installing solo is awkward. And at around $1,020 it is four times a competent tri-fold. If your bed carries mulch rather than tools, the Tyger T3 or the Rough Country tri-fold will not disappoint you; the full trade-off is in hard vs soft tonneau covers.
Best Ram 1500 Tonneau Covers 2026: The Ranked Field
Best for 2019–2024 Ram 1500 with the multifunction tailgate
- Works with the multifunction (split) tailgate
- Matte aluminum panels, ~400 lb load rating
- No-drill clamp install in about 30 minutes
- Locks with the tailgate; 5-year warranty
Why buy it: the hard folding cover Ram owners rate highest — and one of the few premium covers that plays nicely with the split tailgate instead of excluding it.

Best for 2009–2018 Ram 1500 and the 2019–2024 Classic
- Fits 2009–2018 Ram 1500 and 2019–2024 Classic
- 24oz marine-grade vinyl over aluminum frame
- Clamp-on install, no drilling, ~15 minutes
- Folds flat against the bulkhead
Why buy it: the budget cover in the fitment most older-Ram owners actually need — including the Classic body that Ram kept selling alongside the new truck.

Best for key-fob operation on a 2019+ DT-body Ram
- Fits 2019–2025 Ram 1500 5’7" bed
- Does NOT fit the multifunction split tailgate
- Electric open and close from a wireless fob
- Aluminum slats retract into a low canister
Why buy it: the flagship retractable for the DT Ram — but read the tailgate exclusion carefully, because the split tailgate rules this fitment out.

Best for loading and unloading several times a day
- Fits 2019–2025 Ram 1500 5’7" bed
- Does NOT fit the multifunction split tailgate
- Three positions: closed, folded, upright and locked
- Tool-free removal in minutes
Why buy it: the hard folder that stands upright and locks there — owners who work out of the bed say it is the only cover that never gets in the way.

Best for Rams fitted with the RamBox cargo management system
- Built for 2019–2024 Ram 1500 with RamBox
- Works with or without the split tailgate
- Sits just 3/4" above the bed rails
- Rolls fully forward; automatic tension control
Why buy it: one of the few well-reviewed covers made specifically for RamBox trucks, where the narrower bed opening rules out most standard part numbers.

Best for aluminum security on a 2019+ Ram without the premium price
- Fits 2019–2026 Ram 1500 and 1500 TRX 5’7" bed
- Flush-mount aluminum panels
- Clamp-on install, no drilling
- Weather seals with corner drains
Why buy it: the cheapest way into a hard cover on a DT Ram — owners report it doing the security and snow-load job for soft-cover money.

Ram Generations, and the Classic Problem
2009–2018 (DS body, fourth generation). Huge installed base, excellent cover availability across every price band and type. The Tyger T3 fitment in our ranking is written for this body.
2019–2026 (DT body, fifth generation). The redesign. New bed rails, new tailgate options, and the fitment most current cover designs target — including the MX4 448223, the Retrax 90243, the UnderCover FX31008 and the Rough Country tri-fold in our list.
2019–2024 "Ram 1500 Classic." This is the trap. Ram continued building the old DS-body truck alongside the new DT and sold it as the Classic. A 2021 Ram 1500 Classic is, for tonneau purposes, a 2018 truck. Listings usually spell this out — "2009–2018, 2019–2024 Classic" — and if yours does not distinguish, do not assume. Check the tailgate badge and the body shape: the Classic keeps the older, squarer front end and the conventional tailgate.
Get this one wrong and the cover will not mount. It is the single most common return reason on the platform, and it costs nothing to check.
RamBox and the Multifunction Tailgate
RamBox. The factory cargo-management option puts lockable storage boxes into the bed walls. That narrows the bed opening and changes the rail surface, so RamBox trucks need RamBox-specific covers. Coverage is genuinely thinner — fewer brands, fewer types, slightly higher prices — which is why the TruXedo Lo Pro 584901 earns a spot on this list. If a listing does not say "w/RamBox," treat it as not fitting.
Multifunction (split) tailgate. The barn-door tailgate adds hardware at the top of the tailgate that fouls some cover rail designs. Manufacturers publish separate part numbers, and the exclusions are explicit: our #1 pick works with it, while the Retrax and UnderCover fitments in this ranking do not. This is a hard exclusion, not a fitment preference — the cover physically will not close properly.
Bed length. The 1500 comes as a 5’7" (67.4") short bed and a 6’4" (76.3") long bed. Measure it. Every product on this page is linked in a short-bed fitment; the same covers exist in long-bed part numbers.

Choosing by How You Use the Truck
Tools live in the bed. Hard or retractable, no debate — the MX4, the UnderCover Flex, or the Retrax if the budget stretches and you do not have the split tailgate.
The bed carries gear, luggage and yard waste. The Tyger T3 at around $235 genuinely covers it, and you will not miss the difference.
You have RamBox. Your shortlist is short. Start with the TruXedo Lo Pro RamBox fitment and work outward from there.
You work out of the bed all day. The UnderCover Flex stands upright and locks vertically, which is the feature owners in that situation single out.
You want aluminum on a budget. The Rough Country hard tri-fold gets you there for around $400 — the whole hard-cover field is ranked in best hard tonneau cover, and the canister options in best retractable tonneau cover.
How We Rank
We do not install these covers ourselves — there is no shop truck and no lab here. We rank by aggregating owner ratings and review volume across every Ram fitment each cover is sold in, then weighing four things. Durability across seasons — hinge, seal and finish reports after two and three winters. Weather sealing — how often owners describe a dry bed rather than damp tailgate corners. Security — material, locking method and how much more than an opportunist the cover actually stops. And value against warranty terms. On the Ram we additionally weight how clearly a manufacturer handles the DT-versus-Classic, RamBox and split-tailgate splits, because unclear fitment is the leading cause of a bad purchase on this platform. Prices were current US street prices at the time of writing.

The Verdict
For a 2019+ DT-body Ram 1500 — especially one with the multifunction tailgate — the BAK BAKFlip MX4 (448223) is the cover to buy. On a 2009–2018 Ram or a 2019–2024 Classic, the Tyger Auto T3 covers the bed properly for around $235. RamBox trucks should start with the TruXedo Lo Pro RamBox fitment, and anyone who wants aluminum without the premium price should look at the Rough Country hard tri-fold. Check your body, your bed length, your RamBox status and your tailgate before you order — see how to measure your truck bed. Other platforms are covered in best tonneau cover for the F-150 and for the Tacoma, the whole field in the tonneau covers hub, and whole-vehicle protection in car covers.
