I've restored a lot of foggy headlights, from a beater project car that looked like it had cataracts to a mate's daily that just needed a freshen-up. The process is genuinely simple. The difference between a result that turns heads and one that disappoints usually comes down to two things: patience with the sanding, and never, ever skipping the seal. Let me walk you through exactly how I do it.
What you'll need
You can buy this as a bundled kit or gather it yourself. Either way, the shopping list is short:
- Wet/dry sandpaper in a few grits — typically 400 or 600 to start, then 1000, 1500 and 2000. Heavier oxidation needs a coarser start.
- A spray bottle of clean water (a drop of car soap in it helps the paper glide).
- Painter's tape to protect the surrounding paint.
- Polishing compound and a clean applicator or microfiber.
- A UV sealant — a wipe, spray or ceramic-style coat made for headlights. This is non-negotiable.
- Microfiber towels and, ideally, some masking around the wheel arch to catch drips.

Step 1: Wash and tape
Clean the lens with car soap and dry it. Grit trapped under your sandpaper is how you put fresh scratches in. Then run two passes of painter's tape all the way around the headlight, overlapping the paint edge. When you're sanding, the paper will inevitably kiss the panel — the tape is the difference between a clean job and a sanded-through fender. Take the extra two minutes here.
Step 2: Wet-sand through the grits
This is the heart of it. Keep everything soaking wet the entire time — dip the paper, spray the lens, and keep spraying as you go. Dry sanding gouges polycarbonate badly.
Start with your coarsest grit (say 600 for moderate yellowing, 400 for heavy oxidation). Sand in straight, even strokes in one direction until the whole lens turns a uniform, milky frost. That cloudiness is correct — it means you've cut past the damaged layer. Rinse, then move to the next grit and sand in a direction ninety degrees to the last, so you can see when you've erased the previous scratches. Repeat up through 1000, 1500 and 2000.

Step 3: Compound and polish to clarity
After your finest grit, the lens will look evenly frosted and smooth to the touch. Now you bring back the shine. Put a dab of compound on a microfiber or foam applicator and work it in firm circles across the lens. You'll watch the frost melt into clarity in real time — it's the satisfying part. Buff off the residue with a clean towel and inspect in good light. It should look wet-clear. If you still see cloudiness or fine scratches, either your sanding wasn't quite uniform or you skipped a grit — go back rather than trying to bury it under sealant.
Step 4: Seal it — the step everyone skips
Here's where most DIY jobs quietly fail. You've just polished away the factory UV coating along with the yellowing. The plastic underneath is now clear but completely unprotected, and sunlight will re-yellow it fast. So you apply a fresh UV sealant while the lens is clean and dry.
Wipe or spray it on in a thin, even coat per the product's directions, avoid touching it while it cures, and keep the car out of rain for a few hours. This single step is the whole reason a proper restoration lasts a year or two instead of a couple of weeks. Why this works when the cheap hacks don't
You'll see toothpaste and bug-spray "hacks" all over the internet. They can make a lens look better for a day because they're mildly abrasive — but they don't remove the deep oxidation and they never seal. Within a week or two you're back where you started. The reason the sand-compound-seal method wins is that it treats the actual problem — damaged, UV-degraded plastic — instead of masking it. You physically remove the bad layer, restore optical clarity, then protect the fresh surface.
Keeping them clear afterward
Once they're done, a little upkeep keeps them that way. Park in shade when you can, give the lenses a quick wax or sealant top-up a couple of times a year, and clean them when you wash the car. If the sealant you used is a durable ceramic-style coat, you may not touch them again for a couple of years. If it's a basic wipe, plan a refresh each season.
