Step 1: Wash and tape

Clean the lens with car soap and dry it. Grit trapped under your sandpaper is how you put fresh scratches in. Then run two passes of painter's tape all the way around the headlight, overlapping the paint edge. Step 3: Compound and polish to clarity

After your finest grit, the lens will look evenly frosted and smooth to the touch. Now you bring back the shine. Put a dab of compound on a microfiber or foam applicator and work it in firm circles across the lens. You'll watch the frost melt into clarity in real time — it's the satisfying part. Here's where most DIY jobs quietly fail. You've just polished away the factory UV coating along with the yellowing. The plastic underneath is now clear but completely unprotected, and sunlight will re-yellow it fast. So you apply a fresh UV sealant while the lens is clean and dry.
