Applying the foam and dwell time
Spray from the bottom up in overlapping passes so you can see coverage, then a second pass top-down to blanket the roof and glass. Let it dwell a few minutes — this is the foam doing its job, softening and lifting grit so your wash mitt drags less dirt across the paint later. Don't let it fully dry, especially in sun. Then rinse from the top down.
Foam is a pre-wash, not a magic wash. It loosens the loose stuff so contact washing is safer; it won't dissolve bonded grime on its own.
If it isn't foaming

Keeping the cannon working long-term
A foam cannon is a simple tool, but two habits keep it foaming like new. First, rinse it after every use. Run clean water through it for a few seconds to flush soap out of the mesh and metering channels — dried soap is the number-one cause of a cannon that slowly stops foaming. Second, store the bottle empty and dry. Leaving diluted soap sitting for weeks can gum up the pickup tube and breed a funky smell.
Every so often, check the small brass orifice at the front for blockages — a stray bit of grit or hardened soap there chokes the foam instantly. A pin or paperclip clears it. Treat the cannon this way and it'll outlast several washers.
Does water temperature help?
A small tip that surprises people: slightly warm water in the cannon bottle helps soap dissolve and foam up thicker than icy-cold water does. You don't need hot water, and most consumer washers aren't rated for it anyway — but mixing your soap with lukewarm water rather than straight from a freezing tap gives you a noticeably richer blanket, especially in winter.
