Parking mode is the single most misunderstood dash cam feature, mostly because of one fear — "won’t it kill my battery?" The honest answer is: only if you skip the part that stops it. Let’s walk through what parking mode does, the different flavors of it, how it’s powered, and whether it’s worth it for how you park.
What parking mode actually does
A normal dash cam records only while you drive and shuts off when you leave. Parking mode changes that: the camera stays alert while the car is parked and off, ready to capture anything that happens to it. That covers the incidents you’re powerless against otherwise — someone reversing into your bumper in a lot and driving away, a shopping cart rolling into your door, keying, or an attempted break-in. Without parking mode, all of those happen off-camera. With it, you have a timestamped clip and, often, a plate.

The three types of parking mode
"Parking mode" is really an umbrella for a few different ways of watching a still car. Most good cameras offer more than one:
- Motion detection: the camera sits idle until something moves in the frame, then wakes and records. Great for catching a person or car approaching, but it can trigger on passing traffic or pedestrians and fill the card with non-events.
- Impact / G-sensor detection: the camera records only when it feels a physical bump or jolt. This is the one that catches the parking-lot hit-and-run. Because it only fires on actual contact, it’s efficient and low on false alarms — but it won’t capture someone circling the car before they touch it.
- Time-lapse: the camera records continuously at a low frame rate (say 1–5 frames per second), producing a complete but choppy record of the whole parked period in a small file. You get everything, just not smoothly.
The best implementation is buffered recording: the camera keeps a rolling few seconds in memory, so when an impact triggers, it saves the moments before and after the hit, not just the aftermath. That’s what captures the car actually making contact, which is the clip you need.
How parking mode is powered
Here’s the crux. Parking mode needs power while the ignition is off, and in most cars the cigarette-lighter socket goes dead when you shut the car down — so a simple plug-in setup can’t run parking mode. The catch, of course, is that drawing power from an always-on circuit means drawing from your battery. Which brings us to the fear.
Will it drain your battery? (The honest answer)

Every quality kit includes a low-voltage cutoff: you set a voltage threshold (or a timer), and the moment your battery drops to that level, the kit cuts power to the camera automatically, leaving more than enough charge to start the car. The situations where people do get a dead battery are avoidable: running parking mode with no cutoff at all, setting the cutoff too low, or using it on a battery that’s already old and weak.
