The plug-in setup

This is how most cameras come out of the box: a power cable that ends in a 12V plug for your cigarette-lighter / accessory socket. You mount the camera, hide the cable in the trim, and plug it in. That’s the entire job.

The hardwire setup

Hardwiring swaps the cigarette plug for a hardwire kit — a cable that taps power directly from your fuse box using an add-a-fuse adapter, and grounds to a bare metal bolt on the chassis. The camera’s power now comes from inside the dash, not the socket.

The upside is a cleaner, more permanent install and, crucially, parking mode. Because you can tap a constant-power (always-on) fuse, the camera can keep watching while the car is parked and off — catching the hit-and-runs and vandalism a driving-only camera misses.
