Short version: the box will shout "4K!" at you, but resolution is only half the story. 4K genuinely helps you read a license plate at distance — but after dark, where a lot of incidents happen, the sensor (Sony STARVIS / STARVIS 2) and HDR matter just as much. Add GPS for evidence-grade speed and location data, and a supercapacitor so the camera survives a baking summer cabin. Get those four right and you can ignore most of the rest of the spec sheet. Here’s what every dash cam feature actually does, and which ones are worth paying for.
Dash cam listings are a wall of acronyms and big numbers designed to make you spend more. Let’s decode them one at a time so you know what changes the footage and what’s just marketing.
Resolution: 1080p vs 2K vs 4K
Resolution is how much detail the camera captures. More pixels means you can zoom in further before the image turns to mush — and the single moment that matters most is reading a license plate.
- 1080p (Full HD): the baseline. Perfectly usable for showing what happened, and fine for reading nearby plates. Budget cameras and simple units like compact Garmins record here.
- 2K / 1440p: the sweet spot for many drivers. A clear step up in plate-reading and detail without the storage demands of 4K.
- 4K (2160p): the sharpest, and genuinely useful for reading plates at distance or of fast-moving cars. The trade-offs are bigger files (you’ll want a larger, faster memory card) and the fact that a cheap 4K sensor can actually look worse at night than a good 2K one.
The honest takeaway: buy 4K if plate-reading matters to you and you’re buying from a reputable brand — but don’t treat the number as the whole story. A great sensor at 2K beats a poor sensor at 4K in the conditions that count.
The sensor: where night footage is won
This is the spec most buyers overlook and enthusiasts obsess over. The image sensor determines how well the camera sees in low light — and since a huge share of incidents happen at dusk, at night, or in rain, low-light performance often matters more than raw resolution.
The name to look for is Sony STARVIS, and especially the newer STARVIS 2. These sensors are built specifically for low-light capture, and a camera using one will typically produce cleaner, brighter, more usable night footage than a cheaper camera at the same resolution. When you see two cameras with identical resolution at similar prices, the sensor is often the tiebreaker. It’s one of the most reliable quality signals on the whole spec sheet.
HDR / WDR
HDR (High Dynamic Range) and WDR (Wide Dynamic Range) help the camera handle scenes with both bright and dark areas at once — like driving out of a dark tunnel into sunlight, or a night street with glaring headlights and black shadows. Without it, the bright parts blow out to white or the dark parts crush to black, and you lose the detail (like a plate) you needed. HDR balances the exposure so more of the frame stays readable. It works hand-in-hand with a good sensor, and together they’re what make night and high-contrast footage genuinely usable.
GPS
A GPS module stamps your speed, location and route onto the footage. This does two things. First, it strengthens the clip as evidence — being able to show you were travelling at the speed limit at a specific spot can be decisive in a dispute or insurance claim. Second, it lets you replay your route on a map during playback. GPS isn’t essential, but it’s genuinely useful, and if two cameras are otherwise equal, the one with GPS is the better buy. Most mid-range and flagship cameras include it.
Supercapacitor vs battery, and storage
Two practical specs that quietly decide reliability. First, how the camera stores its emergency power: a supercapacitor holds just enough charge to safely finish saving a file when the car shuts off, and it tolerates the brutal heat of a parked summer car far better than a lithium battery, which can swell or fail. In hot climates, or if you use parking mode, a supercapacitor camera is the more reliable long-term choice.
Second, storage: dash cams loop-record, constantly overwriting the oldest footage, which wears out ordinary microSD cards fast. Always use a high-endurance card rated for dash cams or surveillance, and check the camera’s maximum supported capacity (commonly 256GB or 512GB) — higher resolutions eat space, so 4K cameras want a bigger card.
Features that are nice, not essential
A few more you’ll see advertised: Wi-Fi (lets you pull clips to your phone without a laptop — very convenient, worth having); voice control (handy for locking a clip hands-free); ADAS lane-departure and collision alerts (pleasant but not why you buy a dash cam); a screen (nice for aiming and playback, though screen-less cameras rely on the app and hide better). None of these should override the core four — resolution, sensor, HDR and GPS — but they’re good tiebreakers.
Putting it together
Ignore the acronym avalanche and focus on four things: enough resolution to read plates (2K is plenty for most, 4K if you want the best), a good sensor (Sony STARVIS 2), HDR for night and high-contrast scenes, and GPS for evidence.
