Manufacturers inflate the count with dozens of driver bits, a full rainbow of hex keys, and sometimes zip ties. A set can hit a huge number while quietly skipping the 1/2" drive you need for suspension and brake work. Drive Sizes: The Thing That Actually Matters
A ratchet's "drive" is the square peg that sockets slot onto, and it comes in three sizes you'll use constantly:
- 1/4" drive — small and nimble, for interior trim, electronics, small engine fasteners and anything low-torque in a tight space.
- 3/8" drive — the workhorse. Most general jobs live here: brackets, sensors, mid-size bolts. If you could own only one, it's this.
- 1/2" drive — the muscle. Suspension, brakes, crank and axle bolts, and anything needing real leverage. Skipping this is the most common false economy in a cheap set.

SAE and Metric: You Need Both
Sockets come in two measurement systems: metric (millimeters) and SAE (fractions of an inch). Modern Japanese, European and most newer domestic cars are almost entirely metric. Older American vehicles, plus a lot of shop and household hardware, are SAE. Sockets come in standard (short) and deep versions. Standard sockets handle most bolts. For strength, favor 6-point; many good sets include both. Second, material: chrome vanadium (Cr-V) steel is the quality standard for hand tools. Storage: Case vs Drawer Box
Storage is more important than beginners expect, because a set you can't find pieces in is a set you won't use. A molded blow-mold case is fine to start — each tool has a spot, and you can see at a glance what's missing. A steel drawer box is a nicer long-term home and often signals a more serious set, but it takes up bench or floor space.
