Short version: a socket set looks intimidating — rows of near-identical chrome cylinders in two measurement systems — but it comes down to a few simple ideas: drive size, socket size, point count, depth, and the chrome-vs-impact distinction. Understand those five things and you can confidently grab the right socket for any job. This is the plain-English primer to read before your first wrenching job.

The Anatomy of a Socket
A socket is a metal cylinder with two important ends. One end has a square hole — the "drive" — that clicks onto your ratchet or wrench. The other end has a six- or twelve-sided opening that fits over a bolt head or nut. You match the opening to the fastener and the drive to your ratchet. That's the whole concept. Everything else is just picking the right variant.
Drive Size vs Socket Size (Don't Confuse Them)
This trips up every beginner, so let's be clear. There are two different "sizes" on any socket:
- Drive size — the square hole on the back. For cars it's 1/4", 3/8" or 1/2". This matches your ratchet, not the bolt.
- Socket size — the opening on the front, like 10 mm or 1/2". This matches the fastener.
So a "3/8" drive, 13 mm socket" attaches to a 3/8" ratchet and fits a 13 mm bolt. The two numbers are unrelated. Drive size is about leverage and torque capacity; socket size is about the fastener.
The Three Drive Sizes
- 1/4" drive — small, light, for low-torque work in tight spaces: interior trim, electronics, small engine fasteners.
- 3/8" drive — the everyday workhorse. Most engine-bay and general jobs live here. If you learn one, learn this.
- 1/2" drive — the heavy hitter for high-torque jobs: lug nuts, brakes, suspension, crank bolts.

SAE vs Metric
Sockets come in two measurement systems and you'll need both. Metric sizes (in millimeters — 8, 10, 13, 17 mm and so on) fit almost all modern cars. SAE sizes (in fractions of an inch — 7/16", 1/2", 9/16") fit older American vehicles and lots of shop and household hardware. Critically, they are not interchangeable — a 13 mm socket is close to 1/2" but forcing the wrong one rounds off the fastener. Every socket is stamped with its size; keep your metric and SAE clearly separated in the case so you grab the right one.
6-Point vs 12-Point
Look into the socket opening and count the sides. A 6-point socket contacts the six flat faces of a bolt head — this spreads the load onto the strongest part of the fastener and resists rounding, making it the better choice for tight, rusted or high-torque bolts. A 12-point socket has twice the notches, so it slides onto a fastener at more angles (handy when you can't fully rotate the socket), but it grips nearer the corners and can round a stubborn bolt. Rule of thumb: 6-point for strength, 12-point for convenience.
Standard vs Deep
Sockets come in two lengths. Standard (shallow) sockets handle the majority of bolts sitting flush or with short protrusion. Deep sockets are taller to swallow a long stud — think of a nut partway down a threaded rod, like exhaust or strut fasteners, or a spark plug down in its well. A good set has both depths in the common sizes. Without deep sockets, you'll eventually meet a stud that a standard socket simply can't reach over.
Chrome vs Impact Sockets (A Safety Must-Know)
This is the one that isn't just about convenience — it's about safety. Chrome sockets (shiny, the ones in your hand-tool set) are hardened for durability, which makes them somewhat brittle. Impact sockets (dull black) are made from a tougher, slightly softer alloy designed to absorb sudden shock. If you put a chrome socket on a cordless impact wrench or use it with a breaker bar under heavy load, it can crack or shatter and throw metal shards. Extensions, Adapters and Universal Joints
A few accessories complete the picture. Extensions (bars of various lengths) reach recessed bolts and get your hand clear of hot or sharp parts. Adapters step between drive sizes. Universal (swivel) joints let a socket work at an angle around obstructions. Most sets include a handful of each — they turn "I can't reach that bolt" into "I can." Just remember every extension and joint adds a little flex, so keep the shortest tool that reaches the job.
The Sizes You'll Actually Use
You won't use every socket in the tray equally. On most cars, the metric sizes you'll reach for constantly are 8, 10, 12, 13, 14, 17 and 19 mm — and the 10 mm most of all (also the one that mysteriously vanishes from every garage). Lug nuts are usually 17, 19 or 21 mm. Knowing this, you can grab confidently instead of trying sockets one by one.
