The Sidewall Number Is a Trap

Inflate to that maximum and you'll usually get a harsh, bouncy ride, reduced grip (less rubber touching the road), and faster wear down the center of the tread, which balds the middle while the edges still look new. The reverse happens in a heatwave, and driving itself warms the tires and raises the reading.
Two rules handle this. First, always set pressure cold — when the car's been parked a few hours or driven under a mile — because that's how the spec is defined. Second, re-check when the seasons change, especially heading into winter. If you can only fill warm tires at a gas station after a drive, add about 3–4 PSI over target and re-check cold later.
How Often to Check
Check at least once a month and before any long trip. Tires lose air naturally — often a PSI or more a month through the rubber and the valve — so even a leak-free tire drifts low over time. A monthly cold check catches that, catches slow punctures early, and keeps economy and tire life at their peak. Make it a habit tied to something regular, like the first fill-up of the month.

It's a useful safety net, but it's a last line of defense, not a substitute for checking: by the time it triggers, the tire is already meaningfully underinflated, and a small daily loss can sit under the threshold for weeks.
